Collegium is not an inquiry committee whose recommendations should be withheld: SC

The Supreme Court on Friday asked the Central Government how many names have been re-recommended by the Collegium for appointment as judges in the higher judiciary. The court has also asked why these names have not been considered till now and at what level the approval is pending. A bench of CJI DY Chandrachud, Justice JB Pardiwala and Justice Manoj Mishra sought this information from the Center on a public interest petition. The petitioner has requested to direct that a time limit be set for notifying the appointment of judges recommended by the Supreme Court Collegium. The bench said, 'The Collegium of the Supreme Court is not a search committee whose recommendations can be stopped.'
