RALEIGH - The Raleigh Fire Department's call volume exceeded 30,000 for the first time last year, with 30,204 total calls in 2004. In 2003, total calls numbered 28,540, up from 27,156 in 2002. Total call volume in the Capital City has been steadily increasing for over a decade.
The top engine companies were Engine 3 (2,311), Engine 11 (2,268), Engine 1 (2,243), Engine 12 (2,116), and Engine 15 (2,057). The top truck companies were Truck 1 (1,687), Truck 11 (1,569), and Truck 16 (1,220). The Raleigh Fire Department operates 28 engine and 6 truck companies.
Rescue 7 beat Rescue 14 as the busiest of the city's three rescue units; while Battalion 1 passed Battalion 2 as most active of four Battalion Chiefs.
Run totals for special units included 121 calls for SR5, the mobile air unit, 90 calls for Haz-Mat 2, relocated late last year from Station 20, and 83 calls for Haz-Mat 15, which presently operates as part of North Carolina Regional Response Team 4.
