RALEIGH - A full assignment was dispatched to a reported structure fire at the intersections of Capital and Crabtree Boulevards on Tuesday, January 25 at approximately 9:26 p.m.
After the units marked en route, the dispatcher reported reports of "fire coming through the roof" and "multiple explosions." Engine 11 was responding downhill from the north and reported heavy smoke in that direction.
Engine 7, first on scene, reported a probable trash fire. They quickly confirmed a fully-involved vehicle fire. An apparently abandoned automobile was parked in a grassy area between two commercial structures at 2220 and 2226 Capital Boulevard.
Engine 3 and Truck 11 were turned away, while Engine 11 stayed to assist Engine 7 with hand line and hydrant operations. Rescue 7 also remained on scene.
With explosions from the burning vehicle during the initial application of water, firefighters retreated and began assembling in-line foam apparatus.
After an extended application of foam, the fire was controlled approximately 30 minutes later.
