LUMBERTON – At 12:15 p.m., about an hour after arriving on scene, firefighters were still battling a blaze engulfing a downtown building.
Lumberton Fire Chief Paul Ivey said that no injuries had been reported in the fire at 202 N. Chestnut St. Lumberton police Capt. Terry Parker said no one was inside when the blaze broke out sometime around 11 a.m.
Traffic remained blocked off on Second Street between Elm and Walnut streets as firefighters from at least three stations — Central, Northwoods and East Howellsville — fought the fire. Despite billowing smoke and the sound of shattering glass, concerned residents filled the downtown plaza and nearby sidewalks watching the blaze.
The brick building until 2013 housed the headquarters of United Way of Robeson County. It’s unclear what is currently in the building.
