After Agneepath and Brothers, director Karan Malhotra's next film Shamshera is released on July 22. Starring Ranbir Kapoor, Sanjay Dutt, and Vaani Kapoor, the film is based on a fictional story set in the 19th century. Talking about this film, Karan says, 'When I met Adi (producer Aditya Chopra), he told me a core idea of this film. I liked that idea so much that I and Ekta (Karan's wife) made a whole script on it. After that Piyush Mishra wrote its dialogues and then the process of casting started.
The first two actors on our wish list were Ranbir Kapoor and Vaani Kapoor, they have come on board. The story of this movie is completely fictional, it has no direct connection with any true incident. Even so, when you make a period film, it's important to have an audience somewhere in the world. We have made this film in the background of the year 1871. Our effort has been to keep some such historical things in the film.
